Tripoli Harbour Stage 2A

Tripoli Harbour Stage 2A – Breakwaters

Client : General Ports and Lights Authority, Libya

Start Date : July 1977

Finish Date : March 1980

Key features of Work Scope:
The scope of the project covered the construction of two rubble mound breakwaters as the initial stage of the outer harbour development of Tripoli. The Main Breakwater was 2,520 m and the Lee Breakwater 1,415 m. Both have a deepest section of 12 m. The total quantity of rock used was 13,700,000 m3.
The quantity of concrete used was 210,700 m3. For the armor, rocks of size 2-8 tons and tetrapods of size 6,3-8 m3 were used. As the main breakwater stemmed from the existing harbor, the contract called for the execution of the works solely by sea access. Therefore a fleet of dump and flat barges, a landing craft and transit mixer mounted barges were mobilized to construct the main breakwater from the sea. The lee breakwater was constructed from a land access.
